Ending three decades of "isolation" for India, President Bush today signed path-changing legislation that will enable American firms to assist in the expansion of India's civil nuclear power generation - opening significant new trade doors with an emerging Asian power once at odds with the United States.

The agreement represents a reversal of decades of discord with India, which developed its nuclear weaponry outside the bounds of international treaties and long stood as a Cold War ally of the Soviet Union.

"This will represent a major sea change in the way the world works," said Nicholas Burns, the undersecretary of state for political affairs who negotiated the deal with India. "There is a larger story here - the U.S. is making a strategic move to build a stronger relationship with India," Burns added, suggesting that after more than three decades of adversarial relations the U.S. is "bringing India in from the cold."

So, your last job didn't exactly pan out. Maybe your boss or your co-workers were jerks, or U were laid off - or even fired. Now, U are looking forward to your next job interview.

What is your biggest hurdle?
Is it job references, or your spotty resume, or even your former boss?
No, it's probably your attitude & preparation. A positive, forward-looking attitude impresses employers, while a negative attitude can be a turn-off. A candidate who is prepared -- who has researched the company s/he is interviewing with & the position & knows what she can bring to the job -- appears professional & mature, worthy of being considered.

An unprepared candidate gives the appearance of being disorganised & unprofessional & only reinforces any impression that might be given in a bad reference.

Here are some "Do's & Don'ts" to improve your attitude & preparation before your big interview:

Don't worry.
Worrying is only natural, but most people, at one time or another, had a job that didn't work out. Chances are that your interviewer may have even been let go from a job. Worrying saps your energy & leaves U powerless. Instead, take some active steps before the interview to practice responding to any possible objections that U believe an employer would have to hiring you.

Counter a poor reference with many other good ones.
Prepare ahead if U think your former boss may give U a bad reference. Call other former employers who thought well of U & would give U a good reference, & obtain a letter of recommendation. The more letters of recommendation U are able to provide, the less significant a bad reference will appear. Ultimately, a decision-maker will weigh all the evidence & may weigh references in your favour.

Prepare to answer hard questions professionally.
Hard questions are part of any interview, but they can seem even harder when your last job did not work out. Prepare possible hard questions & the answers U would give to them if asked. Have your friends or relatives listen to your answers & give U their opinions on how the answers sound. There is no shame in having left a job if U can articulate why the job didn't work out for U & what U learned from the experience.

Know your accomplishments & your value.
Believe that U do bring value & skills to a prospective employer. Spend some time thinking about what U accomplished at your previous jobs. What skills do U bring to the table? Are these skills in demand? Make a list & review it again & again. This will improve your attitude & self-confidence & will help U at your interview.

Don't blame other people for your previous work problems.
Responsible employees are in demand. Interviewers do not like candidates who make excuses. Discuss your accomplishments instead of the negative aspects of your previous job. If U have to talk about why the job did not work out, discuss what U learned from the experience that will make U a better employee in the future.

Keep searching & don't get discouraged.
The reason U did not get a job may have absolutely nothing to do with you. If U did not get the job, do write & then call the interviewer to find out why U were not hired. Make it clear that U are not trying to change their decision, only to get information that will help U in your job search. Learn from each interview & continue searching.

There was a one hour interview on CNBC with Warren Buffet, the second richest man who has donated $31 billion to charity. Here are some very interesting aspects of his life:

1) He bought his first share at age 11 and he now regrets that he started too late!

2) He bought a small farm at age 14 with savings from delivering newspapers.

3) He still lives in the same small 3 bedroom house in mid-town Omaha, that he bought after he got married 50 years ago. He says that he has everything he needs in that house. His house does not have a wall or a fence.

4) He drives his own car everywhere and does not have a driver or security people around him.

5) He never travels by private jet, although he owns the world's largest private jet company.

6) His company, Berkshire Hathaway, owns 63 companies. He writes only one letter each year to the CEOs of these companies, giving them goals for the year. He never holds meetings or calls them on a regular basis.

7) He has given his CEO's only two rules. Rule number 1: do not lose any of your share holder's money. Rule number 2: Do not forget rule number 1.

8) He does not socialize with the high society crowd. His past time after he gets home is to make himself some pop corn and watch television.

The three skills that people in an organization have are leading, managing, and working. Every person has a combination of all three. I refer to a leader as someone who is strongest in leadership, a manager as one who is strongest in management and a worker as one who is strongest in workmanship.

To understand better what leadership is, let us first discuss it in the context of what leadership is not.

Leadership is not equivalent to managing others. A leader needs to manage the self while teaching and guiding others to manage themselves. Leadership is different from management in several aspects. While a person can be a good leader as well as a good manager, the two are two different talents. A President & CEO needs to be both a leader and a manager. The Chief Architect can just be a leader. A Project Manager can be just a manager. A programmer can just be a worker. A manager often needs to make others do things, but rarely needs to do those things her/himself. This does not imply that a manager’s role is less significant. The manager does the important work of making the workers successfully do their work.

A manager does not need to be an innovator, but a leader needs to be. A manager follows the rules and makes workers follow the rules. A manager is most effective when things are going according to plan. A leader on the other hand, is equally effective when things are going according to plan or not. A leader rewrites the rules when necessary. A leader guides the manager in coming up with a new plan when needed. A leader often realizes it even before a new plan is needed. A leader is a visionary. A leader imagines great things. The leader formulates a high level plan. The manager creates a detailed plan from that and manages workers to implement using that plan.

To be a leader does not mean being a high and mighty boss. A leader is a servant as much as a commander. A good leader cares about others. A leader must lead others to success. If a leader’s goal was to achieve success only for one’s own self, then I’d call him or her a climber, for one who climbs to success, but not a leader. A leader who does not benefit others serves no purpose in an organization or in society.

Being a leader sometimes requires sacrificing ones own interests for the good of others.

Contrary to some beliefs, a leader should be generally popular and liked. A leader does not do just what the leader thinks is best for others, but what the team decides is best for the team. A leader provides results and enlightenment (as in understanding of those results). If people consistently do not understand what or why the leader is doing, the leader needs to be replaced. A leader realizes that people are intelligent and gives them appropriate credit.

A leader is not merely a teacher. A leader is a student and an instructor.

Leadership is not easy. It is not for everyone. Can anyone become a good leader? Yes. Should everyone become a leader? No.

Dealing with under-performance requires tact & sensitivity

Managing demotivated, un-cooperative or negative employees is what training courses euphemistically term "a challenge". To have only conscientious, motivated & talented staff is as joyful as it is rare.

The ability to deal with under-performers is a critical management skill as sour, demotivated employees can quickly poison the attitude of other workers. In a demoralized or highly charged working environment, managers must have a full armoury of "people skills" & develop acute sensitivity to the situation.

Some cases are simpler to deal with than others. If under-performance is simply due to laziness & the job is one where productivity can be measured, it is easier to persuade a poor performer to leave or improve. In some call centers, 4 example, staff are electronically monitored 4 the number of daily calls they handle.

But other situations require careful handling. Managers should be alert to evidence of poor time-keeping, frequent mood swings & lack of enthusiasm & focus - the classic signs of demotivation. Under-performers often have nothing positive to say about their colleagues & will snipe at motivated & productive workers. They also equate being present in the office with working, regardless of how much they actually achieve.

Many managers make the mistake of looking 4 solutions to the problem before they understand it. So they send demotivated staff on training courses or offer them sabbaticals. Some try to move them to other parts of the organisation. One chief executive had the brilliant idea of herding them together in a prestigious-sounding subsidiary & selling it off.

More seriously, it is vital 4 the manager to get to the root of the problem. He or she can ask when feelings of dissatisfaction first set in, whether there were any specific reasons 4 it & how the worker is coping with the job from day to day.

There are many reasons 4 under-performance. Distraction is a common cause. People might have too much going on in their lives - an affair, sickness in the family or an addiction such as alcohol, drugs or gambling. The symptoms here are secrecy, endless phone calls & increasing absenteeism. The solution? Support first; deadlines second. People in this situation will probably need time off or counselling, but they also need to be a deadline by which time they must have dealt with the problem or agree to seek professional help.

Another reason 4 under-performance is simple personality. The quiet, reserved person may reveal themselves as indifferent & deeply uncommunicative. Equally, the easy-going worker might simply be passive-aggressive by nature. The problem is that people present the best side of their personality at interview.

Many managers often confuse lack of ability with lack of training. No amount of training courses will help people who are simply not up to the job. In these cases, they should be demoted or offered early retirement. 4 staff who are genuinely out of their depth because they have not been trained properly, appropriate courses & rewards 4 new skills will prevent dissatisfaction from setting in.

However, there is another reason 4 under-performance which managers can easily overlook: management itself. Well-balanced, happy & enthusiastic staff can become alienated, uncommitted workers simply because of the way they are managed. Management is about challenge & support: bosses need to set clear goals that stretch staff & help them attain them. Unfortunately, goal-setting is often done badly - either goals are not set or they are impossible to achieve. Equally unhelpful is a boss who is so kind & supportive that goals are never reached.

It is hard 4 managers who are steeped in one corporate culture to recognize that different norms apply to other organizations. Companies have all sorts of subtle rules on dress, time-keeping, productivity & so on. Those who move from the public to the private sector or take a job after being self-employed often have a rude awakening. Only then do they realize how their management style affects staff motivation & performance.

Under-performers need clear goals, a positive working environment & the support & understanding of their managers. As Chairman Mao believed, difficult staff can be re-educated - but managers must realize that they, too, have a crucial role to play.

To simplify the task of activating many copies of Vista, Microsoft offers corporate users special tools, among them Key Management Service (KMS), which allows a company to run a Microsoft-supplied authorization server on its own network and activate Vista without contacting Microsoft for each copy.

The software Microsoft.Windows.Vista.Local.Activation.Server-MelindaGates lets users spoof that KMS process, allowing them to activate copies of the enterprise editions of Vista, its creators say. ACAPULCO GOLD
Shake together six parts pineapple juice, one part grapefruit juice, two parts coconut cream, two parts fresh cream & a scoop of crushed ice. Serve unstrained.

LEMON ICE CREAM SODA
